It also keeps the roots cool in very hot temperatures .  As time goes on, mulch breaks down as it decays, giving plant life nutrients.  Mulch’s thick layer of organic matter also provides weed suppression.  It also provides erosion control by adhering to itself and preventing rain from washing it away.  Lastly, mulch is aesthetically pleasing in that it gives great bed definition and curb appeal.
